How Much Space Does a Fish Table Really Need?

How much space does a fish table really need? More than the cabinet itself. You need room for players to sit comfortably, people to walk past, technicians to reach service panels, and the machine to get through the building in the first place.

This is easy to overlook when buying from photos. A fish table may fit the floor plan on paper but become awkward once chairs are added—or arrive at the venue and not fit through a doorway.

For arcade operators and distributors, checking a few measurements before ordering can prevent a surprisingly expensive problem later.

Start With the Actual Fish Table Dimensions

Don’t estimate cabinet size from player count. Two eight-player fish tables can have different footprints depending on the screen, control panel layout, cabinet design, and decorative structure.

Ask for the complete length, width, and height of the model you are buying. If anything extends beyond the main cabinet, make sure it is included in the dimensions.

For example, when considering an 8-player commercial fish table, request the current dimensional drawing for that configuration rather than judging its size from product photos.

Also ask whether the machine ships fully assembled or in sections. That matters when you start checking doors, elevators, and hallways.

Don’t Forget the Players Around the Table

Cabinet dimensions tell you how much floor the machine occupies. They don’t tell you how much space the machine needs when people are actually using it.

Picture every player position occupied. Chairs or stools extend beyond the cabinet. Players need room to sit down and stand up. Other customers still need to move around the game room.

You also need access for maintenance. If a service panel opens toward a wall, leaving only a narrow gap may turn a simple repair into a job that requires moving the entire machine.

There isn’t one clearance number that works for every fish table. The right amount of space depends on the cabinet, seating, service-panel locations, venue layout, and local requirements.

Measure These Five Things Before You Order

A simple floor plan is usually enough to spot problems before the machine is shipped.

Check Why It Matters
Cabinet length and width Confirms the basic floor footprint
Player seating Shows how much room the machine needs during actual use
Service access Keeps panels accessible for inspection and repair
Walkways Helps maintain practical circulation around the machine
Delivery route Confirms the cabinet can actually reach its final location

For U.S. venues, accessibility also needs to be considered. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design include requirements for accessible routes and walking surfaces. These standards should not be treated as a universal spacing rule for every arcade machine, so the final layout should be checked against the requirements that apply to your venue.

Canadian buyers should likewise check the accessibility, building, fire, and egress requirements that apply in their province and municipality.

Will the Fish Table Fit Through the Door?

Floor space isn’t the only measurement that matters. The machine still has to get from the truck to its final position.

Measure the narrowest point along the delivery route. Check the entrance door, internal doors, hallways, elevator openings, corners, and any stairs or changes in floor level.

A doorway may appear wide enough until you try to turn a long cabinet through it. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance is also a useful illustration of why clear width and maneuvering space are different issues.

Before shipment, ask for the packed dimensions and weight, and confirm whether major cabinet sections can be separated for delivery. If access looks tight, send the supplier measurements and photos before the order is finalized.

What Should You Send the Supplier?

If you’re unsure which fish table fits your location, don’t start with only a player count. Give the supplier enough information to compare the machine with the actual site.

  • Available floor length and width.
  • Preferred number of player positions.
  • Door and elevator dimensions if access is limited.
  • Photos or a simple floor plan of the installation area.
  • Target market and any OEM requirements.
  • Expected order quantity.

For distributors, keep the final dimensional drawing with the purchase record. If a later order uses a different cabinet or internal configuration, you have something concrete to compare instead of relying on memory.

Industry Insight: Bigger Isn’t Always Better

It’s easy to compare fish tables by the number of player positions. In a real game room, though, more seats only help if customers can use them comfortably.

A large table squeezed into the wrong location can create awkward seating, poor circulation, and difficult maintenance. A machine that fits the room properly may be the better commercial choice even if it has fewer player positions.

For buyers, that makes a cabinet drawing and a basic floor plan surprisingly valuable at the quotation stage. They answer a question that product photos cannot: will this machine actually work in this location?

Final Thoughts

Before ordering a fish table, check more than the cabinet dimensions. Measure the player area, service access, walkways, and the complete delivery route. Then confirm the final dimensions for the exact machine configuration being quoted.
