How Much Electricity Does an Arcade Machine Use? A Practical Guide

Ask how much electricity an arcade machine uses and the first answer is often a wattage taken from a power supply label. For a commercial venue, that number is not enough.

A compact cabinet, a basketball machine and a multiplayer fish table may all run in the same game room, but their screens, computers, lighting, fans, motors and payment hardware create very different loads.

The practical approach is to measure the complete machine in its delivered configuration, then calculate the cost from real operating hours. That gives venue owners a better electrical plan, distributors a repeatable specification and repair teams a useful baseline.

There Is No Standard Arcade Machine Wattage

Power consumption comes from the whole system: display, PCB or computer, speakers, LED lighting, cooling fans, sensors, motors and payment devices. Change any of those parts and the reading may change.

A large fish game machine may have several player stations and more than one display. A sports machine may add blowers, scoring sensors or moving parts. Even similar-looking cabinets can use different boards, monitors and lighting systems.

For that reason, a generic figure found online should never be the final basis for a venue circuit or electricity budget. Buyers should request the electrical specification for the exact configuration being ordered.

Power Supply Rating Is Not Running Consumption

An 800W power supply does not mean the machine continuously consumes 800W. The rating describes the unit’s output capacity; the actual load depends on what the connected components are drawing at that moment.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that nameplate wattage often represents maximum power and that actual use varies with operating settings. A suitable electricity meter is therefore more useful than estimating from the power supply label alone.

How to Estimate the Daily Electricity Cost

Once running power has been measured, energy use is easy to estimate:

Running watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day

Suppose a complete machine measures 600W during normal operation and runs for 12 hours per day:

The example uses the April 2026 U.S. commercial average of 13.51 cents per kWh. It is not an arcade industry average. Replace the wattage, operating hours and tariff with the venue’s own figures.

Measure the Machine Under Real Operating Conditions

A quick power-on test rarely represents a trading day. Record the machine in attract mode, normal play and the heaviest realistic operating condition.

For a multiplayer fish machine, test all player positions with the payment system, lighting and normal sound level operating. Keep both the stable reading and the highest observed load.

Write the tested configuration and date beside the result. A different monitor, computer, LED system or card reader can change the reading. Heat should also be noted: blocked vents, failed fans or an overloaded power supply may cause restarts and screen instability before the electricity bill looks unusual.

Plan Circuits, Not Just Sockets

Several outlets may still share one circuit. Counting sockets does not confirm that the wiring can carry every machine expected to operate at the same time.

Venue planning should include the combined machine load together with lighting, air conditioning and other equipment. Voltage matters as well: the same power load generally draws more current at 110V than at 220V.

Preliminary calculations are useful, but cable size, breaker selection, grounding and permanent wiring must follow local regulations. The OSHA electrical safety standard requires qualified persons for work on energized equipment. Final venue circuits should be confirmed by a qualified local electrician.

What Buyers Should Request From the Supplier

A useful electrical record should include:

  • Input voltage, frequency and nameplate current.
  • Power supply model and rated capacity.
  • Measured power in attract and active modes.
  • Screen, lighting, motor and payment configuration.
  • Plug type, fuse information and wiring documents.
  • Test date, meter and measurement method.

Venue owners can use this information for the circuit plan and electricity budget. Distributors can keep different voltage and hardware versions from being recorded as the same model. Repair buyers gain a baseline when a machine later draws more current, overheats or becomes unstable.

The electricity bill is rarely the main risk. Poor electrical information is.

An underestimated load can lead to breaker trips, emergency rewiring or a delayed opening. An undocumented configuration can result in the wrong replacement power supply. Without a baseline reading, technicians cannot quickly judge whether a machine’s current behaviour is normal.

Do not estimate arcade machine electricity use from cabinet size or power supply wattage alone. Measure the full machine under realistic conditions, calculate the cost from actual hours and tariffs, and have the venue circuit confirmed locally.
