Arcade Machine Spare Parts Inventory: What Game Rooms Should Keep in Stock

A commercial arcade machine is not always stopped by an expensive PCB failure. In many game rooms, the immediate cause is much smaller: a worn microswitch, a loose connector, an unstable power supply, or a payment signal that no longer reaches the I/O board correctly.

The repair may take only a few minutes. Waiting several days for the correct replacement part is usually the real problem.

For operators, distributors, and maintenance buyers, spare parts should be planned around operating risk. The goal is not to keep one of every component. It is to keep the parts most likely to stop important machines and the parts that cannot be sourced quickly.

Why Spare Parts Planning Matters

Which Arcade Parts Should Be Kept in Stock?

Stock decisions should be based on three factors: how often the part is replaced, how much of the machine stops when it fails, and how long a correct replacement takes to arrive.

Buttons, Microswitches, and Joystick Parts

Buttons and joysticks are used continuously, especially on multiplayer fish game machines and competitive amusement machines. They are also relatively quick to replace, making them sensible stock items for almost every commercial venue.

Keep matching buttons, microswitches, joystick assemblies, springs, and short connection wires. Confirm mounting diameter, terminal type, shaft length, and control-panel layout rather than ordering by color or appearance alone.

Power Supplies, Fuses, and Cooling Fans

Restarting, screen flicker, abnormal sound, and unstable PCB operation may begin with poor voltage output, overheating, or a loose power connection.

Venues operating several machines with the same specification should normally keep compatible fuses, fans, and at least one tested power supply. Before replacement, confirm input voltage, output rails, current capacity, terminal positions, dimensions, and grounding.

Payment Parts and Wiring

When a machine cannot accept coins or card credits, the reader is not always the failed part. The fault may come from a signal cable, power connection, pulse setting, I/O board, or software configuration.

Keep the cables, plugs, coin switches, and payment modules actually used in the venue. Label them by voltage, signal type, machine model, and connection point.

Wiring harnesses should also be stored with photos of both connector ends. Similar-looking connectors may use different pin assignments, especially after machines have been modified or repaired several times.

I/O Boards and Main PCBs

Main PCBs and I/O boards cost more and carry a higher compatibility risk, so they should not be stocked in the same quantity as buttons or switches.

A spare board is easier to justify when several machines use the same PCB, software version, player configuration, screen output, and payment interface.

Use a Simple Three-Level Inventory

  • Routine parts: buttons, microswitches, fuses, connectors, short cables, joystick parts, and common fans.
  • Machine-stopping parts: power supplies, payment modules, complete joystick assemblies, and common I/O boards.
  • High-value parts: main PCBs, monitors, touch screens, and customized wiring harnesses.

Routine parts can be reviewed monthly. Machine-stopping parts should reflect how many cabinets use the same component. High-value stock should be decided according to cost, shipping time, machine importance, and long-term supplier availability.

For slow-moving, high-value components, confirming lead time and long-term availability with the manufacturer is often more practical than holding several units.

Electrical Safety Before Repair

Internal repairs should only be carried out by trained personnel. Before opening the cabinet or touching electrical components, disconnect the machine from its energy source and confirm that the relevant circuit is de-energized.

The OSHA 1910.333 electrical safety standard requires live parts to be de-energized before employees work on or near them, except under limited conditions. Switching off the game through its control button is not the same as safely isolating the electrical supply.

For maintenance buyers, keeping these records by machine model can turn several rounds of troubleshooting into one accurate parts request.

A good arcade spare-parts inventory is not measured by how many boxes are on the shelf. It is measured by how quickly the correct machine can be returned to service.

Start with frequently used controls, fuses, fans, wiring, and payment connections. Add power supplies, I/O boards, PCBs, and screens according to machine quantity, compatibility, cost, and delivery time.
